5-Step Safety Check Before You Tow

5-Step Safety Check Before You Tow
In honor of Trailer Safety Week, here’s a quick list to run through before you hit the road.
At Cimarron, we’re proud to build trailers that are safe, strong, and built to last. But even the best trailer still needs a good walk-around before it heads out. Taking just a few minutes to double-check your setup can help you avoid problems down the road.
Here’s a simple 5-step checklist to keep in your back pocket:
1. Make sure the coupler is latched
Before you do anything else, check that the coupler is fully on the hitch ball and latched tight. Lock coupler in place so it can’t come loose. Give it a good tug. It should feel solid.
2. Attach the safety chains and connect the breakaway switch
Attach the chains and clip them to the tow vehicle. Then hook the breakaway cable to something solid. This way, if the trailer ever separates, the brakes will kick in automatically.
3. Raise the jack
Once you're hooked up, crank up the jack all the way and lock it in place. It’s a step that’s easy to forget, but if that jack drags while you're driving, it can cause real damage.
4. Plug in the lights and do a walk-around
Connect the trailer plug to your tow vehicle and flip on the lights. Walk around the trailer and make sure the brake lights, turn signals, and running lights are all working. It's quick, and it matters.
5. Check the tire pressure
Grab a gauge and check each tire, including the spare. Make sure they’re properly inflated based on what the trailer calls for. It only takes a minute and helps prevent blowouts.
That’s it. Five quick steps.
These checks take less than five minutes, but they go a long way. Whether you’re hauling horses to a show or headed down the highway with equipment in tow, it pays to start safe.
At Cimarron, we build trailers that are Better by Design and that includes helping you tow with confidence.
